Tobetsu Anshin Clinic was planned as a facility to support community and home medical care in Tobetsu Town, in an era that marks the next stage of an unprecedented super-aging society. Specifically, it provides internal medicine, dermatology, gynecology, pediatrics, and rehabilitation services, as well as home-visit medical care.
The site faces the main street leading to Tobetsu Station. The Bordeaux-red exterior walls, punctuated by randomly arranged openings, create a rhythmic presence along the streetscape. A large milky-white opening at the southeast corner gently brings light into the interior during the day, while at night it glows like a lantern, illuminating the townscape and giving a sense of reassurance. The design aims to reflect the daily life of the townspeople and their relationship with the building.
In a region designated as a special heavy-snow area, where the temperature difference between summer and winter exceeds 50°C, the roof becomes a crucial factor in architectural environmental design. By comprehensively considering waterproofing, insulation, airtightness, structure, and snow accumulation control, the design adopts a roof form that opens toward the station-front street—expressing a building form unique to cold climates.
